The lineage of Heman the Levite offers a compelling narrative of faith and moral complexities, particularly when we consider his grandfather, the prophet Samuel, and his father, Joel, a judge whose corruption is a cautionary tale. As descendants of the Kohathite line of the Levites, their story encapsulates a pivotal lesson on faithfulness and the consequences of ethical lapses.<\/p>

Heman, a gifted musician and key figure in Israelite worship, was appointed by King David to lead the temple choir, a role that emphasizes the crucial connection between spiritual integrity and leadership. This stands in stark contrast to the questionable actions of his father and uncle Abijah, who took bribes and distorted justice, as chronicled in 1 Samuel 8:3.<\/p>

Heman’s legacy was meant to provide spiritual guidance, but for many minority language groups, that guidance hinges on access to Scripture in a language they can clearly understand.<\/p>

In the context of the ethnic minorities in Indo China, where Christians face both persecution and the absence of the Bible in their native languages, the challenges are undeniably daunting. Without a firm grasp of their faith’s tenets, they risk falling into moral pitfalls similar to those of Samuel’s own sons.<\/p>

For these displaced communities, Heman\u2019s emotional cries to God, reflected in Psalm 88:1-7, resonate with their own feelings of isolation and despair. In times of suffering, we all yearn for language that conveys comfort and hope. Yet, for many in Indo China, that crucial connection continues to elude them.<\/p>

Going the Distance in Bible Translation<\/strong><\/p>

I joined this project’s Bible Translation team in late 2020. Despite attending a Deaf Church with my parents for years, I was surprised by how little I knew about the Bible when I started this work.<\/p>

The beginning was challenging, but the translation team and consultant provided exceptional support. They patiently guided me through understanding the scriptural text and its context, empowering me to contribute confidently to translation discussions. I also received valuable training in Sign Language translation techniques, including video recording and editing.
Our process is thorough: after creating and internally reviewing a translated draft, we test the recordings within the Deaf community. Deaf representatives provide feedback, which we incorporate before consultant review. Our goal is to ensure the translation is clear, natural, and accurately communicates Scripture to the Deaf community.<\/p>

I’m still learning as I draft the Gospel of Matthew, but I feel God’s guidance daily. Each day brings new blessings and insights. Hallelujah!<\/p>
