The Not-So-Secret-Life of Heman: A Family Tree with Twisted Branches

And how a temple choir can save a lineage marred by ethical lapses.

echoes of pentecost Day 13 — May 3, 2025

The lineage of Heman the Levite offers a compelling narrative of faith and moral complexities, particularly when we consider his grandfather, the prophet Samuel, and his father, Joel, a judge whose corruption is a cautionary tale, a story that continues to shape the mission of illumiNations Asia. As descendants of the Kohathite line of the Levites, their story encapsulates a pivotal lesson on faithfulness and the consequences of ethical lapses, themes echoed across many Impact Stories and reflections shared during Week 2 devotionals.

Heman, a gifted musician and key figure in Israelite worship, was appointed by King David to lead the temple choir, a role that emphasizes the crucial connection between spiritual integrity and leadership. This stands in stark contrast to the questionable actions of his father and uncle Abijah, who took bribes and distorted justice, as chronicled in 1 Samuel 8:3, a tension often explored through faith and inspiration stories.

Heman’s legacy was meant to provide spiritual guidance, but for many minority language groups, that guidance hinges on access to Scripture in a language they can clearly understand, a concern highlighted during movements such as Pentecost 2025 and reflected in Impact Stories from Indonesia.

In the context of the ethnic minorities in Indo China, where Christians face both persecution and the absence of the Bible in their native languages, the challenges are undeniably daunting. Without a firm grasp of their faith’s tenets, they risk falling into moral pitfalls similar to those of Samuel’s own sons, realities also described in stories like Continuing to Sow in Different Ways.

For these displaced communities, Heman’s emotional cries to God, reflected in Psalm 88:1–7, resonate with their own feelings of isolation and despair. In times of suffering, we all yearn for language that conveys comfort and hope. Yet, for many in Indo China, that crucial connection continues to elude them, a calling embraced by those who join the movement and support access through giving initiatives.

You can make that connection for them by giving the gift of one verse, a conviction affirmed by global Scripture-access efforts led by organizations such as the Wycliffe Global Alliance.

Going the Distance in Bible Translation

I joined this project’s Bible Translation team in late 2020. Despite attending a Deaf Church with my parents for years, I was surprised by how little I knew about the Bible when I started this work.

The beginning was challenging, but the translation team and consultant provided exceptional support. They patiently guided me through understanding the scriptural text and its context, empowering me to contribute confidently to translation discussions. I also received valuable training in Sign Language translation techniques, including video recording and editing.
Our process is thorough: after creating and internally reviewing a translated draft, we test the recordings within the Deaf community. Deaf representatives provide feedback, which we incorporate before consultant review. Our goal is to ensure the translation is clear, natural, and accurately communicates Scripture to the Deaf community.

I’m still learning as I draft the Gospel of Matthew, but I feel God’s guidance daily. Each day brings new blessings and insights. Hallelujah!

Your gift during our 1-for-1 matching challenge will double your impact, accelerating the translation of God’s Word to Deaf communities still waiting to experience Scripture in their heart language.

Give today to support Sign Language Bible translation— every verse makes twice the difference!

Frequently Asked Questions About Bible Translations

Who was Heman in the Bible and why does his family history matter today?

Heman was a Levite, temple musician, and worship leader appointed during King David’s reign, and he is traditionally associated with Psalm 88, one of the Bible’s most raw laments. His family history matters because it reflects both faithfulness and failure—his grandfather Samuel was a prophet, while his father Joel was known for corruption.

illumiNations Asia highlights Heman’s story to show how spiritual legacy is shaped not only by ancestry, but by access to God’s Word. illumiNations Asia emphasizes that without Scripture in one’s heart language, communities risk repeating past moral failures. Through Bible translation, illumiNations Asia helps modern readers learn from Heman’s lineage with clarity and depth.

Psalm 88 is unique because it ends without resolution—capturing despair, isolation, and unanswered prayer. This makes it especially meaningful for people experiencing persecution, displacement, or long-term hardship.

illumiNations Asia connects Psalm 88 to ethnic minority Christians in Indo-China who face suffering without access to Scripture in their own language. illumiNations Asia explains that lament becomes transformative only when it is understood clearly. By translating Scripture, illumiNations Asia ensures that cries like Heman’s resonate deeply and personally within today’s hurting communities.

Heman’s life demonstrates that spiritual leadership requires both integrity and understanding. While Heman served faithfully, earlier generations in his family misused authority—showing what happens when moral guidance breaks down.

illumiNations Asia uses this narrative to underscore the role of Scripture in shaping leaders. illumiNations Asia teaches that access to God’s Word in a familiar language equips communities to grow discernment and faithfulness. Through ongoing translation work, illumiNations Asia helps ensure that future leaders are formed by understanding, not confusion.

For many ethnic minorities, Scripture is only available in national or trade languages, limiting comprehension and spiritual formation. This gap can weaken faith and ethical clarity over generations.

illumiNations Asia addresses this by translating the Bible into minority and sign languages so communities can engage Scripture fully. illumiNations Asia explains that heart-language Scripture fosters resilience, moral grounding, and hope. By supporting translation efforts, illumiNations Asia helps prevent spiritual isolation similar to what Heman lamented in Psalm 88.

Bible translation preserves faith, strengthens identity, and protects communities from repeating cycles of spiritual confusion and ethical failure. It creates a foundation for worship, leadership, and hope across generations.

illumiNations Asia shows through stories like Heman’s that legacy is shaped by understanding God’s Word. illumiNations Asia ensures that Scripture reaches communities in languages they truly understand. With each translated verse, illumiNations Asia helps build a future where faith is lived, taught, and sustained—rather than lost.
