Daniel’s Defiance: Into the Fire of Persecution

And its echo in East Asia.

echoes of pentecost Day 5 — April 25, 2025

In the Book of Daniel, we encounter a poignant narrative that resonates with the struggles of East Asian Christian minorities today. Daniel, a young Jewish nobleman captured during Babylonian exile, emerges as a symbol of unwavering faith and resilience. His stories of steadfastness urge believers to maintain their conviction in the face of adversity, serving as a touchstone for those navigating the trials of life in hostile environments.

What’s compelling about Daniel’s saga is not merely his integrity but the profound parallels it holds with the experiences of marginalized Christian communities in East Asia. Many minority language groups, living under the shadow of persecution, have a history steeped in conflict with the national majority, and often find themselves in situations echoing Daniel’s — foreign yet resolute, seeking solace and strength amidst a landscape that can be unyielding, where political ideologies have gained religious-like status.

Moreover, the Book of Daniel is distinct in its dual-language composition, written in both Aramaic and Hebrew. This intentional choice speaks to the broader mission of Bible translation, underscoring the necessity of communicating Scripture in languages that resonate authentically with the intended audience.

As the Book of Daniel bravely declares in Daniel 3:17-18, their powerful defiance can serve as a clarion call for language groups still living amidst the echoes of historical conflicts. These East Asian Christian communities deserve to receive God’s Word in their own language — it is not merely a translation; it is necessary for their faith amidst hostility.

The time is now for them to hear and embrace Scripture in the tongue that resonates with their hearts — give a verse today  when Echoes of Pentecost is heard, when Heaven meets Earth.

The Way* People’s Journey of Faith

The Way* people identify as Christians but are often influenced by animism. Many still offer sacrifices to appease ancestral spirits. In addition, political instability has jeopardized the wellbeing of their entire country.

Many Way* speakers have had to flee for their lives. In this difficult context, Bible translators continue to work on John’s Gospel and other New Testament books. Though he was a church leader, Way* translator Paul* still blended his faith with Way* traditional beliefs. But after working on Romans, he affirmed his belief that salvation comes through Christ alone!
